چکیده

Referring actions in multimodal situations can be thought of as linguistic expressions well coordinated with several physical actions. In this paper, what patterns of linguistic expressions are commonly used and how physical actions are temporally coordinated to them are reported based on corpus examinations. In particular, by categorizing objects according to two features, visibility and membership, the schematic patterns of referring expressions are derived. The di erence between the occurrence frequencies of those patterns in a multimodal situation and a spoken-mode situation explains the ndings of our previous research. Implementation based on these results is on going.

Towards generation of fluent referring action in a multimodal situations

We have been developing a system that uses natural language in combination with visual information such as pictures and gestures, to generate effective explanations. The experimental system we implemented is for explaining the installation and operation of a telephone with answering machine feature, and simulates instruction dialogues performed by an expert in a face-to-face situation with a te...

Towards a Balanced Corpus of Multimodal Referring Expressions in Dialogue

This paper describes an experiment in which dialogues are elicited through an identification task. Currently we are transcribing the collected data. The primary purpose of the experiment is to test a number of hypotheses regarding both the production and perception of multimodal referring expressions. To achieve this, the experiment was designed such that a number of factors (prior reference, f...

Towards the Generation of Overspecified Multimodal Referring Expressions

Recently, there has been an increased interest in the generation of multimodal referring expressions (e.g., Salmon-Alt and Romary, 2000; Lester et al., 1999; André and Rist, 1996; Reithinger, 1992; Claassen, 1992). The task involved in generation of multimodal referring expressions is to decide what is the best way to refer to a target via different modalities in the current context. Existing a...

Towards a Common Framework for Multimodal Generation: The Behavior Markup Language

This paper describes an international effort to unify a multimodal behavior generation framework for Embodied Conversational Agents (ECAs). We propose a three stage model we call SAIBA where the stages represent intent planning, behavior planning and behavior realization. A Function Markup Language (FML), describing intent without referring to physical behavior, mediates between the first two s...

Evaluating an Algorithm for the Generation of Multimodal Referring Expressions in a Virtual World: A Pilot Study

This paper presents a quest for the most suitable setting and method to assess the naturalness of the output of an existing algorithm for the generation of multimodal referring expressions. For the evaluation of this algorithm a setting in Second Life was built. This paper reports on a pilot study that aimed to assess (1) the suitability of the setting and (2) the design of our evaluation metho...
